SOUNDARYARAAJA PERUMAL KOIL

As legend has it, there was a three breasted princess, whose prophecy came to be true when her third breast dissappeared on meeting her groom. The groom is supposed to have been Nagaraja ( which is why this place is called Nagapattinam ) who is supposed to have worshipped Vishnu at this place and got to see the Lord's different postures. They postures are depicted in the temple as Soundarya raaja perumal the central deity facing the east. He is also called Neelamegaperumal ( Neela-Blue, Mega - cloud, sky .Here perumal is a suffix to all forms of Vishnu in south india ). This temple happens to be one of the 108 Temples & Celestial Abodes of Vishnu revered by the Tamil hymns of the Alwars of the 1st millennium CE. Each such abode is called Divya Desam ( Holy Place). This divya desam is a big temple. The other deities in temple are Govindaraajaperumal and Ranganaathar. Ranganaathar is in reclining posture where in he is comforted by his consort Lakshmi on the serpent Adishesha. According to the Shaivaite cult it is because of the Adishesha that this place has been known by its name. The temple has 3 prakarams and 7 tiered Raaja Gopuram. There are six offerings made to the lord each day. The festivals are celebrated during the various periods of the year like March-April, July August and December-January.
